Salt and Light

Hebrews 13: 1-3
Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.

It seems, at times, that all we hear about or see in the news is acts of violence or terror. The bombing in Boston, a rocket attack in Israel, another bombing in India and North Korea threatening war at any time are just the latest incidents this week alone. Rodney King asked during the Los Angeles riots in 1993. "Can we all get along?"

I like a quote from the English Christian leader and Anglican cleric John R.W. Stott who said
We should not ask "What is wrong with the world?" for that diagnosis has already been given. Rather, we should ask, "What has happened to the salt and light?"

The writer of Hebrews tells us that we can draw good from evil. The first three verses of Hebrews 13 tell us how we are the salt and light.

  1.   Love one another as brothers and sister
  2.  Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers
  3.  Continue to remember those in prison….. and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were  suffering

No matter whether we travel locally or internationality we are all ambassadors for Christ and should cultivate this grace of love and hospitality. In the ancient world hospitality included putting up a guest overnight or sometimes longer. The Hebrew converts to Christ, for whom this letter was written, would not know whether a guest could be a spy or a fellow believer. They were taking a chance by entertaining a stranger but their act of kindness might have far reaching, very good consequences. Abraham and Sarah, Gideon and Manoah all showed hospitality to angels without knowing it.

I like to say live locally, think eternally for as Christians we can make a difference now and for all eternity.

Grüß Gott from Bavaria.
