Rusty and Bent

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Mark 6:1-13 tells us Jesus told his

disciples there really is no easy way. Go out there and get after my

mission. He tells them some will heed your words and listen , and others

are going to reject you. Keep the faith and trust that I am with you as

you persist on the path I have called you to. I turn 53 today. For most

of my life, I think I have looked for an easier way whenever I could. In

regards to being a follower of Jesus -I have gone to conferences, read

books,  prayed , and searched the scriptures for the wisdom to make the

mission meaningful, yet somehow more effortless and painless as well.

So far at least all attempts to grow closer to Jesus have not

simplified matters in terms of being a follower of the Lord , if

anything they have brought on more complications.  In her

book “Traveling Mercies,” p. 103, Anne Lamott offers some insight that is helpful in

this regard. “It's funny. I always imagined when I was a kid that

adults had some kind of inner toolbox, full of shiny tools: the saw of

discernment, the hammer of wisdom, the sandpaper of patience. But then

when I grew up I found that life handed you these rusty bent old

tools—friendship, prayer, conscience, honesty—and said ,’ Do the best

you can with these, they will have to do. And mostly, against all odds,

they’re enough.” As I celebrate number 53 and enter year 54, I give

thanks for each of you. I live in a tapestry of relationships Jesus has

blessed me with, that remind me that though it may not be simple nor

easy, for each other we are ,” ….rusty bent nails,….and against all

odds…” they are enough to build the lives of faith that offer the

guidance, purpose and meaning for life we crave.  May this truth live

within us all. Enjoy the holiday.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
