Remember

Dear Saints and Sinners,

This is a big week for me. It is not only Halloween tomorrow, it is All Saints on Sunday. I agree 100% with Martin Luther’s definition of a Saint, "a forgiven sinner."  However, without the Saints who have died and gone on before us to the next dimension of the kingdom of God we would have no faith.

I really like the words of author Ernest J. Gaines when he was explaining why he takes care of an old cemetery on the former plantation where five generations of his ancestors, going back to slavery, lived and were also buried. “If I didn’t have those people back there, I would never have had anything to write about. That’s where I got all my stories from. My life is from them … I’m going to do everything to keep up for them in memory. That’s my duty from now till I die.” (Source New York Times)

Reflect this week on your Saints. Read about them in the context of Luke 6:20-31

Ask these questions as you pray through the names of your Saints. How did the person’s life offer you “information” about Jesus?  How did the person's life "imitate" Jesus as they walked alongside you in faith? And, how did the person's life allow you to “innovate” and go out on your own in faith?

I will see all you Saints on Sunday,

Pastor David J. Jensen
