Reaching Beyond

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
As Jesus was dying upon the cross he looked out and saw his mother and the disciple “whom he loved.” Jesus said to them, ”Woman, here is your son. Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother.” (John 19:26,27)
Why are we here? What is the purpose of my life? In these two verses, some 2000 years later, Jesus offers his disciples a great responses to such questions.
Disciples are to offer immense love to others at all times. Jesus was in the midst of suffering a great death for the benefit of you and all who have roamed this planet.
Jesus demonstrated compassion. He had every reason to focus on himself and the unjust capital punishment he was experiencing. However, he reached out beyond himself to be sure his mother was going to be taken care of. Followers of Jesus are to do likewise.
Most powerful of all may be the transformation and twist Jesus gave to “family values “ as he died. With no apparent biological connection between them, Christ offered a mourning mother and close friend the bond of family. How many of the world’s problems would disappear if we allowed ourselves to see all people as family. Mother Theresa said, ”The greatest of sin is to draw the circle of family too small.” Let us follow Christ' lead and draw the circle in infinite proportion.
