Dear Death Defiers,

John 11 is the story of Jesus raising his good buddy Lazarus from the dead. I have had good friends I wish I could raise from the dead. Most recently I desired to bring back to the flesh Betsy Patterson and Ed Chipman. They were my good friends and I miss them. Who do you wish could come back to you this day, in the flesh?Wouldn’t it be great to give that cherished friend or beloved family member a hug? In Jesus' defense, the biblical story says it is all taken care of. We will reunite? What is to be the posture of the church?

Our biblical story demands an offensive posture from the church, rather than a defensive one. The world and all its resources, anguish, gifts and groaning is God’s world, and God demands that what God has created. Jesus Christ is the supreme act of divine intrusion into the world's settled arrangements. To quote Stanley Hauerwas,   "In Christ, God refuses to stay in place.”

One day we will see Betsy, Ed, Uncle Danny, Grandpa Alfred, Owen and every person we’ve met or maybe never met, that we miss. Because this Jesus rose from the dead and refuses to "stay in place.”

Still in one peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
