Quit or Follow

Dear Potential Quitters and Followers of Jesus,

“Many among Jesus'disciples heard his teaching and said, "This is hard to swallow.” (John 6:60)
“After this a lot Jesus'disciples left and said, "They no longer wanted to be associated with Jesus.”            (John 6:66)
“Jesus looked at those who were left and said,"Do you want to leave also?” (John 6:67)
“Peter replied,"Master, to whom shall we go you have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)

Do you want to “leave” or follow this Jesus? If you want to stay, it will require courage and the willingness to receive ”the gift” of grace that leads to eternal life.

Theologian Karl Barth often spoke about theology as a “scientific endeavor” in which everything is keyed and focused upon the object of scrutiny. Scientific thinking said Barth,”… is that manner of thought that is exclusively focused upon the object of scrutiny. Everything is determined by the object. Our interpretation of scripture, our preaching and our worship is ‘scientific’ in that it is focused upon and receives form and modulation from its object.”

I believe what Barth was trying to convey is this... It is not about us; it is about the One who is the ” Bread of Life.” (John 6:47,48) It is a great gift to have one’s life swept up in a meaning greater than yourself. It is a great gift to give modern, western people the means to have something more important to think about, something more important to live for, than ourselves.

Does this seem complicated, difficult, even frightening? Jesus said,“This is why I told you earlier that no one is capable of coming to me on their own. You get to me only as a gift from the Father.” (John 6:65)

Still in One Peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
