Promise

Dear Blessed,

In Matthew 5:4 Jesus says, ”Blessed are those who mourn ...” I’ve always wanted to have a firmer grasp of a mystery within that verse.

About this time last year the doctor came into my mother’s room and said, ”She has at most six months to live. You need to make arrangements for hospice and get things in order.” As a family, we had watched her health decline and we knew scientifically things were not good. But the reality set in when the doctor spoke that day.

We all thought Mom was sleeping as the doctor spoke of the end of her life. After the doctor left the room she stirred a bit,  then opened her eyes.  I asked her if  she needed anything. Mom confidently said, ”Yes I do. If the end of my physical life is near, I need all my loved ones holding hands around my bed as I go into the glory of God.”

Apparently my mother Beverly Rae Jensen was well aware of the physical realities she was facing. In the end she died in less than one month, not six. Yet with her words of testimony she gave for all to hear, she left us with  an even greater expression of trust in the reality of the promise of the resurrection.

Matthew 5:4 “ Blessed are those who mourn….” My mom offered me the blessing of Jesus from her death bed.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David Jensen
