Predictable Surprises

Advent means "coming" and the four weeks leading up to Christmas are known as Advent in the church year (a calendar that is tied to the rhythms of God's time and the life of Jesus).

During Advent, Pastor Dave helped us to understand, we look forward to God coming to live among us at the birth of the baby Jesus and to the time when Jesus will come again.   When that time is no one knows, only God knows, so we must be prepared to meet him at any time.   And, Thank God! we don't know when the time is or who knows what we might be doing.

  • Why would God use the strategy of surprise for end times? How might Jesus’ predictable surprise be good news for us? (Matthew 24:36-51)
  • How have you seen strength in weakness? How could weakness make you stronger? (Luke 23:33-43)
  • Acknowledge the darkness in your life and pray for the light of the coming Christ child.

Pastor Dave recommended reading about "end times" from the author, Barbara Rossing.  Her book, "The Rapture Exposed: The Message of Hope in the Book of Revelation", might be a good place to start.

Don't forget to pick up a copy of Richard Rohr's Advent Daily Devotional, "Preparing for Christmas".  Contact Nancy Nickoley and she will see that you get one.
