Positive Change

Do you ever feel like you are dealing with difficult people? Are we the ones being difficult? Do you ever feel like if only people would do what they are supposed to do things would be easier and less complicated? Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just be accountable and get along?

The last few weeks, I have found myself asking the question, “Can I change it”? Of course I’d like to say “yes” 100% of the time; but the reality is that there are things in this world that I cannot change. The only thing I can change is myself and how I react to something or someone.

As I was looking for a version of the Serenity Prayer, I was reminded of a prayer written by St. Francis of Assisi.

Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon
Where there is doubt, faith,
Where there is despair, hope,
Where there is darkness, light,
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console,
not so much to be understood as to understand,
not so much to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
it is in dying that we awake to eternal life.

--- St. Francis of Assisi

Reading these words I was reminded that even in the midst of frustration there are other ways to look at things. Change in myself can take place and a positive side can be seen. This positive side seems like a much better place to spend my time.

Dear God: Thank you for the gifts you have given us. We thank you for the gift of change and flexibility. We thank you for helping us to see that things may not always be what they seem and with an open heart & mind we can see that there are two sides to people and the situations we deal with daily. Please help us to be understanding and to find a way to accept things we can and cannot change. In your name we pray. Amen
