Plant Yourself!

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (Contemporary English Version): “But I will bless those who trust me. They will be like trees growing beside a stream - trees with roots that reach down to the water, and with leaves that are always green. They bear fruit every year and are never worried by a lack of rain.”

We went out to Grand Junction last year and as we were riding along some back roads, I pulled my bike over to the shoulder and ran away into the woods to take photos of this secluded stream. I snapped numerous photos (while Ken patiently waited roadside with our motorcycles).

There are plants all around this stream that pull water and suck up the nutrients to grow and bloom. Even on the hottest of days, the water continues to run and the plant roots reach out toward that stream to sustain life. When there is drought and things look dreary, the roots might work a little harder to stretch toward the water, but they still bear fruit…because they are planted firmly by that stream of living water. The plants do not move away from the source of life.

As the water falls down over these rocks, it runs in different directions. Just like me. I may be standing on that rock in the middle and I miss the water because I can’t make up my mind which direction I want to go. I gotta jump back in the stream. As the water flows over me, I am reborn – if I allow God to strengthen my roots.

I want to be a plant.

Dear God,
Plant me firmly by your stream of living water. Sustain my roots. Drown out all my fears and doubts. When things are tough and I don’t see or hear the water (or I’m running in a different direction), remind me that you are the source of life and that you will sustain me through everything. You will never abandon me. You will never leave me. Thank you for deepening my roots. As my roots depend on you more, I trust that you will help me to be greener and bear more fruit.

Draw me near to you Father God. Quench my thirst and help me to be satisfied with what you give me so that I can bear fruit in the world. Keep me watered. Keep me green. Help me to bear fruit. Help me to hear the water and be ever reminded that you will sustain me with that living water that I was baptized in. Even when it’s only a trickle, help me to hear it and grow. I know you will provide all I need. Amen.

As I returned to my motorcycle, I ran across these beautiful flowers in the field downstream. Bloom where you are planted. Don’t worry about tomorrow. God will provide!
