Perfect? You've Got To Be Kidding

Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you. ~ Jesus

Umm, Jesus, I don’t understand. How can I love my enemies? The dictionary defines enemy as an unfriendly opponent, hostile power and something harmful or obstructive. That’s why I can’t love them, it’s pretty much in the definition. And, how can I be good to people who hate me? They don’t like me. They don’t want me to do something good to them. They’re not nice. I don’t want to be nice. It’s not right. It’s easy for you to say: you’re God and you have to love everyone. It’s in your job description. But I’m just a lowly human.

Grow up and be perfect like God is perfect to you. ~ Jesus

Now you’ve gone off the deep end Jesus. How on earth can I be perfect? That’s impossible. I think you need to grow up and live in the real world that I live in. Do you even know how people treat me? Do you understand how hard I try to do the right thing and follow you? I mess up way more than I get it right. I thought you were in the forgiveness business, not the perfection business.

Have you ever had a conversation with Jesus like this? Or, maybe when we think about Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:38-48 these are the kind of unconscious discussions we have with him. We may not say out loud or even think it, but I bet this is what's going on under the surface. What Jesus is suggesting is really, really hard. And I’m not sure, I’ll ever get it right. But, Jesus holds high expectations for us and, lovingly thinks we can do it.

I’m pretty sure I can’t do it unless you’ll do it with me. I find that I’m better when I’m together with others trying to do it too. Thank you God for creating us to be in relationship. I know I can't do without God.  Thank you God for loving us enough to want us to love perfectly as you do.

I hope to see you tomorrow at 9 or 10:30 AND 11:30! First, for worship to support one another in living out Jesus’ teachings. And, then at 11:30 for the GGCC Annual Gathering & Celebration to remember where God was among us in 2013 and look forward to where God is calling us to in 2014. Together we can find Perfect Vision.

Grace, love and peace,
