Come and See

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The great invitation of scripture is “COME and SEE”. It is mentioned often in the Bible, John, chapter 2 is a favorite location of mine for this invitation. Religious people have tried to coerce and force others in to a new religious paradigm in many ways. When the only thing we are called to do is to invite others to “come and see”.

God’s Grace Community Church (GGCC) has seen the hand of God in our relationship with the Hopewell Baptist church near Booneville, Mississippi.  It all began in January of 1983 when William and  Big Mama Jumper invited a frightened seminarian from rural Iowa into their Detroit, Michigan home. What the seminarian “came to see” over the month he was there was God's capacity to transform the stranger into a family member. The seminarian went from frightened stranger to family member. The stranger became another parent in a world where every child can never have enough moms and dads.

“It is not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them and to hide yourself from your kin.” (Isaiah 58:7)

We are each “kin” here to help the other have their needs met.

“Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring forth quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.” (Isaiah 58:8)

God has got your back, the Lord is your “rear guard”.

When we trust in the Lord to keep such promises. We can step out to “come and see” with courage of faith in what God will do among us. As a congregation we have  become family with Big Mama and her daughters, Angie and Bridgette. We mourned together when William Jumper died. We have gone in small groups to Booneville to “come and see” and we have been blessed by a people who have treated us like “kin” and supported us with the love of a God who has our “rear guard”.

This weekend 13 people from Hopewell Baptist will be among us to “come and see” what God is up to in Denver! My prayer is that the same hospitality that has reached into our hearts on trips to Mississippi will be alive and well in Colorado! The risen Jesus I believe is on the move and ready to burst forth in our midst, showing up and showing off!

Saturday we plan to go with the group on a mountain tour. If you wish to go let myself David Jensen or Claudia Larson know.

Sunday, Pastor Gabe Jolly, the Senior Minister of Hopewell Baptist will be the preacher at GGCC.

Sunday after worship there will be a celebration meal at Rock Canyon High School.

Please keep all of the events of this weekend in your  prayers. May the time be sacred and blessed. Let Claudia or myself know if you have any questions about the time ahead with the people of Booneville.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
