Pacifiers Be Gone!

Dear Tempted,

“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit ….was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil.” (Luke 4:1,2)

That craving we sometimes feel deep inside, is not a sign that something has gone wrong. Rather, it might be the sacred place of Jesus within. We will never find anything on earth that can satisfy the craving, but that has not stopped most from trying. As Preacher Barbara Brown Taylor says,” Whenever we start feeling empty inside, we stick our pacifiers in our mouths and suck for all we are worth. They do not nourish us, but at least they plug the hole.”

To enter the “wilderness” is to leave the “pacifiers” behind. Nothing is too small to give up. What is the theological dynamic that is going on when you crave a sugared soda? Are you thirsty? What is wrong with being thirsty?  If you are lonely, what is wrong with being lonely?  What is so bad about being alone?  Try sitting with the feeling instead of fixing it and see what you find out….  Then tell the devil to get lost.

As Lent begins today on Ash Wednesday, I hope in this season of Lent, you dwell a bit with the Jesus of the wilderness experience in Luke 4:1-13.  Prayerfully consider the cravings within which only God can truly satisfy. May you have the discernment to know when to deny the empty "junk foods" of the world that will never vanquish the craving. Seek only the food of Jesus that fills the scared place within.

I hope to see each of you tonight at Rock Canyon High School between 5:30 and 7:30pm.  On the half hour, there will be a brief worship time with song, scripture and prayer. Imposition of ashes and communion will be offered. You may stay for 10 minutes or for the two hour segment.

Blessed Lenten journey to you all.

Still in One Peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
