Overlooked or Ignored

Jesus is talking about shepherds, sheep and goats. (Matthew 25:31-48) I don’t really know anything about sheep and goats and shepherds. I like wool sweaters. I like goat cheese. But I’ve never met a shepherd. Maybe Jesus isn’t really talking to me.

Except, I don’t think that’s true. Jesus is talking to me and to you. This example was relevant to his in-person listeners and maybe we can find a way to hear it as relevant too.

Jesus says, “Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. And here’s why:

  • I was hungry and you fed me,
  • I was thirsty and you gave me a drink,
  • I was homeless and you gave me a room,
  • I was shivering and you gave me clothes,
  • I was sick and you stopped to visit,
  • I was in prison and you came to me.

Everyone says, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry, thirsty, homeless, shivering, sick or in prison?’ And Jesus says, “Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me – you did it to me.”

Whew, whenever we reach out to someone overlooked or ignored, we are serving Jesus himself? That’s convicting. Who are the overlooked or ignored in our lives and in our world?

Many times we don’t even see them, right? Because they are overlooked or ignored. We miss them. And so we miss seeing Jesus.

But we want to see Jesus! Let us pray that we might open our hearts, our minds, our hands, our wallets, our homes, our lives to the overlooked and ignored. The ones across the street, on the corners, getting ready to go back to school, at the border and around the world. We can’t do everything, but we can do something. Because, we do want to see Jesus.

Grace be with you,

Vikki
