Outward Token

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In John 20:21 people come to Phillip and request, “Sir we wish to see Jesus.”

Dietrich Bonheoffer was a brilliant young pastor and seminary teacher who opposed Adolph Hitler’s policies in the 1930’s. On April 5,1943, Germans arrested Bonheoffer and put him in prison. Two years later, the Nazis executed him, hanging him in the gallows just days before the Allies went in to liberate Germany.

About ten weeks after his arrest, Bonheoffer ended a letter with these words …

“It is Monday , and I was just sitting down to dinner of turnips and potatoes when a parcel you sent by Ruth arrived. Such things give me greater joy than I can say. Although I am utterly convinced  that nothing can break the bonds between us , I seem to need some outward token or sign to reassure me. In this way, material things become vehicles of spiritual realities. I suppose it is rather like the felt need in our religion for sacraments.” (Letters and Papers from Prison)

Such ordinary things speak to the extraordinary ways of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“And when I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all things to myself.” John 20:32

The only material possession that matters points us to the resurrected one.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David Jensen

What an exciting svcriee! Vision, passion and the only right focus JESUS. Atmosphere like a Seahawks championship game, Microsoft in the early 90 s and a rock concert put together but for eternal purposes.
