Only One Came Back

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Ten were healed, but only one came back to give Jesus thanks for the healing. See Luke 17:11-19 for the full story.

As Halloween has come and gone I ponder stories of the holidays. I recall one about a Mom who decreed she was no longer going to remind her children of their thank you note duties. As a result, their grandmother never received acknowledgements of the generous checks she had given them. However, the next year things were different...

“The children came over in person to thank me,” the grandmother told a friend triumphantly.

“How wonderful!” the friend exclaimed. “What do you think caused the change in behavior?”

“Oh, that’s easy,” the grandmother replied. “This year I did not sign the checks.”

I am very thankful for my mother Beverly Rae Jensen who passionately drove home the teaching of expressing gratitude to my brothers and I. She instilled in me a ritual of starting each day by sending 2-3 thank you notes which I do yet today. When I think I am doing well with my ritual I hear her whispering in my ear “maybe 2-3 more? You owe a debt of thanks to many David James!” The reality is that my ego still impedes the path of full understanding that I, “sit in the shade of trees I did not plant and I drink from wells I did not dig.”  An expression of endless gratitude for all we have is a faithful posture to grow into each day as a disciple of Christ.

Let us live each day with thankfulness for what God has given us. Send a few thank you notes today.

Prayers for: Thanksgiving. Our re-elected and newly elected leaders. The hungry, the homeless and those in need of healing. And for Alice Nickoley who died on Tuesday, blessed be her memory among us. The family anticipates doing a memorial service later during the holidays.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
