One is a MIGHTY Number

1 Peter 4:10-11 (NLT)

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

I had the privilege of attending the Peace Jam awards luncheon a couple of weeks ago. Betty Williams, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 for her work as a cofounder of “Community of Peace People”, an organization dedicated to promoting a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Northern Ireland, was the featured speaker. She said something so simple and yet so profound that I still can’t stop thinking about it. “One is a mighty number.” Betty made this comment in reference to the difference one person can make in a life, a community, the world. Jesus was one man that had a profound impact on the world, my Grandmother who passed away at the blessed age of 96 this year was but one humble person but because of her there have been teachers, singers, leaders, gardeners, farmers, etc. Someone, somewhere, literally ate bread because my Grandmother graced this world for a time. Many people have eaten the bread of life because Jesus graced us with his presence for a short but memorable life on earth.

I’m sure we all feel so very small and insignificant from time to time. Maybe that is when we most need to hold space in our hearts to consider the gifts we have been given and manifest them daily as we find our own way to be of service to one another. May we each, every day, be mighty.
