Nothing Separates Us

I recently returned from my 39th high school reunion. In the first days of 9th grade I met Mary Claire in math class who instantly became my best friend. She had red hair and most people thought she was related to my sister who had the same beautiful red locks. We practically lived at each other’s houses. We roomed together our first year in college and decorated our dorm room with matching comforters. We were like family and actually ended up for real as stepsisters in a roundabout way after our fathers remarried the same woman (at different times!).

I don’t get to see her very often and being able to reconnect with her was my main reason for attending the reunion. I can still spot her in the crowd – red hair and a welcoming smile just waiting to give me a big hug. We share memories that go way back and even though I mainly know her life now from pictures and not often enough phone calls and emails, we easily catch up because it’s so comfortable and familiar.

And so it is with God. We have a history. At times, I’ve been far away from Him. But He doesn’t care how long I’ve been away, He’s just glad to hear from me. And, just like my friend Mary Claire, He’s easy to spot in a crowd … the face of love and grace (I’m not sure about the red hair) … and is there with a welcoming smile and just waiting to give me a big hug!

Nancy Nickoley

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
