Not Just Anyone

Everyone heard the awful news on February 27th, just 2 ½ weeks ago…yet another school shooting. This one, at Chadron High School, outside of Cleveland, Ohio was equally tragic. A few days after the shooting, I happened to see a news conference involving some school administration and law enforcement officers. Among the group, was Frank Hall, assistant football coach and teacher at the school. He had been hailed a hero for chasing off the shooter and possibly preventing more bloodshed. His words that day have kept ringing in my ears…

"I'm not a hero," said an emotional Hall, who spoke publicly for the first time since the shooting at a news conference Thursday. "I'm just a football coach and study hall teacher. The law enforcement, first-responders that came to our aid that day -- they are the heroes. "

Hall earlier said he wants the victims' families to know that he was with the victims and wiped their tears. "To the victims of the families, I want to say that I'm sorry. My thoughts and prayers are still with you," he said. "I don't know why this happened. I only wished I could have done more." Hall said that he was with the fallen students, wiped their tears, prayed with them and that he knew God was with them too. ~CBS News

So, picture earlier that morning of February 27th, in Frank Hall’s house. There he is, finishing his bowl of oatmeal, grabbing his jacket and kissing his wife goodbye. I’m sure the last thing Frank Hall thought he would be doing less than 2 hours later would be comforting dying students on the floor of the school cafeteria.

My message is this…none of us know what lies in store as we leave our houses any given day. We don’t know when we might be called upon to “be a hero” or simply offer comfort to someone in need. If God is on your team, you will be ready for whatever it is that comes at you.  You are not JUST anyone, or anything. God was on Frank Hall’s team, for sure.  And oh what a blessing Frank Hall must be to the loved ones of the fallen students. No, you are not just a football coach and study hall teacher, Frank, you are a special blessing from God and Jesus is walking alongside you!

In his closing comments during the March 1st new conference, Frank Hall read aloud Matthew 5:14-16…

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill can't be hidden. Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house.
"In the same way, let your light shine in front of others. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will praise your Father who is in heaven.
