No Room at the Inn

We are empty nesters which means we have empty rooms.  However, one of them is  not so empty.  I like to call it my gathering room.  It's the room where everything goes when you don't know what to do with something, don't want to think about it at the moment, or are "cleaning" the rest of the house.

All three of our boys are coming home this weekend to attend the Bronco game.  So we'll be back to having our brood along with my mother-in-law all under one roof.  So, I've spent the last three evenings cleaning out the room full of stuff to make room for a sleeping spot for everyone.  I thought of how I often see things in the realm of scarcity vs. abundance.  I have a house with lots of space yet my first thought was I don't have room for everyone.  Our brothers and sisters living in the trash dump in La Chureca and those in Haiti and others all over the world find it so easy to open their hearts and homes and share what little they have with joy and thanksgiving.  Even in the tiniest of spaces I'm sure they would find room to squeeze in another.

I thought of Mary and Joseph being turned away at the inn.  Mary close to being ready to give birth, traveling miles on a donkey.  Wasn't there some space that could be cleared out just large enough for two people to lay down and rest?  I mean, really, it's not like there's a Holiday Inn around the corner.

I've cleared out the room and am working on clearing my mind of the stuff that clutters it - like worry and fear.  Then I hope to find ways to keep squeezing in more stuff like love, sharing, caring, giving, welcoming, listening, hugging, thanking, laughing, smiling, singing.  I want my heart to be full....on the verge of bursting.  I want it crammed full of things in life that matter.  The cozier the better!

May you take time this season to inhale the sweetness of the wonderful gift of Jesus you have received.  Share it with someone.  Let your inn be full but don't lock the door.  There's always room to welcome the stranger looking for the gift of grace.

Warm blessings,

Nancy Nickoley
