Next to Last

Dear Resurrected,

The women ran from the empty tomb according to Mark's gospel, ”…they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.” (Mark 16:8)

The women came out of the tomb thinking that the story had ended, that it was all over between them and Jesus. To their surprise, and even to their great fear, they found that things were not over. Things were just beginning. The last word had yet to be spoken. And the last word was God’s.

The late author Frederick Buechner said:   “The worst isn't the last thing about the world. It is the next to last.” (Frederick Buechner as told to W. Dale Brown, “Of Fiction and Faith: Twelve American Writers Talk about Their Vision and Work” , Grand Rapids Michigan : Eerdmans Publishing Company,1997.)

Do you put your faith in the last thing, or the next to last thing? The great “Resurrection Stories" are lived out by those who trust that God always has another chapter after the worst has happened.

Prayers go out to all those in Manchester, England in the wake of the recent bombing. Let us trust in the resurrection and that this devastation was the worst thing but not the last thing to happen.

Prayers also go out to Tammy Heflebower and all who mourn the death of her father, Don Saville.

As we approach this Memorial Day weekend, keep in mind the legacy of all who sacrificed that you might enjoy the life you have.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
