New Places

By the time this hits the blog, my daughter and I will be on day 3 of our latest adventure. We decided to go somewhere “we’d never been before,” so we are exploring the coast of Maine, possibly near Acadia National Park today. The only thing scheduled was our rental car, the first night’s hotel near Salem, MA and our return flight from Portland, ME. We’re anticipating beautiful sights, delicious seafood, interesting people and new experiences.

It’s intriguing how many of us are uncomfortable with the unknown. Or maybe it’s that we are just more comfortable with the familiar. Is there a difference in the two? We go to the same 3 restaurants, the same 2 grocery stores, and sometimes we even have the same vacation destination year after year. I’m not knocking that way of thinking; I too am a creature of habit on some fronts. But maybe it’s a good thing to step out of the box of familiarity and try something new. We all know, just when we think we’re in control of everything, calling the shots, making our plans…something comes along and changes it. It’s a “God thing” usually, trying to shake us and wake us!

I encourage you to try something new this month…go out for an ethnic food you’ve never eaten; volunteer somewhere you’ve never been just for an afternoon; take a different route home from work; go see a movie you would normally never see and above all, your next vacation go somewhere you’ve never been before. All the while, look for the “God moments” that are bound to be all around your “new places.”
