New Pathways

Dear Bush Pilots,

A story is told of a man who hired a bush pilot to take him caribou hunting in Canada. He asked the pilot to land in a remote place.
The pilot said, “There aren’t any caribou in this area.”
The hunter said, “Yes, there are. I was here last year.” Sure enough in a few hours the hunter returned, dragging two caribou.
The pilot said, “You can’t load those two caribou. The plane cannot bear the weight.”
The hunter said, “Well, I did this last year. Same size plane, same size caribou.” The pilot reluctantly agreed, and they took off.
The pilot was right. The plane couldn’t carry the load, and crashed into the side of a mountain.
Fortunately, no one was hurt. Observing the wreckage of his plane , the pilot got angry at the hunter. “ I cannot believe I let you talk me into this. I knew this plane couldn’t carry two caribou. Now we’re stranded on this mountain and no one will ever find us.”
“Don’t worry,” said the hunter, reassuringly. “The rescue team will find us in no time. We’re just a few hundred feet from where we crashed last year.”

Do you ever feel like you are in a routine that is going to the same stale pattern? Perhaps it is time to not do everything the way you did it last year? I trust that Jesus is calling each of us into a fresh pattern of behavior with regularity. God's intent is that we grow and become transformed anew each day.

May God be at work today leading you into a fresh pathway and new life.

James 3:17 tells us, “That faith without works is dead.” Faith is a gift from God that pulls us into action. The combination of faith and action propels us into a life of faith that follows Jesus in dynamic ways in the world.

As a congregation, you will see some new things transpiring in our midst this fall. Jesus does not want us to be the hunter bouncing off the same mountain as last year, waiting for the rescue team. Let us grow together this day in the ever changing way Jesus leads us individually and communally to follow him.

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
