Names

We carefully pick baby names. The names of our dogs and cats are important. Some people name their cars. Nicknames can be good or bad.

A lot rides on a name.

We learned last week that the names of the Messiah were significant. Angels said to name Mary’s spirit-conceived baby Jesus, which means “saves” because he will save his people from their sins. And he is also called Immanuel, which means “God is with us.”

This is different from what people originally called God. Actually, the Israelites didn’t call God anything. They did not use God’s name for fear of using God’s name inappropriately. God’s name was “I am”, at least that’s what God told Moses. But the Israelites were afraid to call on God’s name, God was more like “he who shall not be named.” Because of this God grew distant to the people.

So God decided to work on this problem. By coming to be one of us and by having a name. When you know someone’s name, you can begin to be in relationship with them. And that’s exactly what God did.

It’s still Christmas. And we continue to celebrate this God who came to be with us and who gave us his names.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 10:00 am ONLY! We’ll celebrate this God who came to be one of us because God wants to be with us. And get ready for a new year.

Grace and peace,

Vikki
