Movin' On

I looked at the devotion calendar and saw I was assigned the New Year’s Eve devotion. There is lot of pressure there to say something profound. That is a daunting task for someone that expresses himself mostly through irreverent humor. Taking a look at the last month or so, the big build up from Thanksgiving forward to Christmas was a fun ride. I always enjoy Christmas Eve, which is like a giant cleansing exhale, finally time to relax. Then on to New Year’s and a little of the “out with the old and in with the new.” Ever try to give your “classic” clothes to your kids? Mine gave me “the look” when I asked who wanted my vintage Levi jackets. I thought I was being very generous. Well then, time to move forward. Celebrate the new year! New Year’s Eve is exciting! It reminds me to focus on moving forward, not what lays behind. In Philippians, Paul reminds us to move forward. So does Mitch in City Slickers, when he realizes “life is a do over”; keep moving forward. Let go of the past. I carry with me what is known, but I am willing to accept the unknown because I never know what God has in store for me, but I can’t wait to see! Part of letting go of the past is forgiveness. So I pray that God will grant me the strength to move forward, accept His call for me, and to forgive in this new year.

Pressing toward the Goal: Phillipians 3:12-14

“Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.”
