More and more impressed

I recently witnessed another side to a friend’s personality that I had never seen and it wasn’t flattering.  But isn’t that true of everyone?  As we get to know people better we begin to see their personality and character flaws – both small and not so small.

One of my favorite passages in the Bible is the story of Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well in the fourth chapter of John.  Now Jews and Samaritans did not get along.  This is an understatement - kind of like saying the Grand Canyon is just a big ditch.

In the beginning of the story the woman refers to Jesus as a Jew.  In the next paragraph she calls him “sir”.  A couple of exchanges later, she refers to him as a prophet and then a paragraph later she realizes he is the Messiah.

I think this illustrates a key difference between the Creator and the created.  As we get to know each other better and better we become less and less impressed as we discover each other’s flaws and imperfections.  As we get to know Jesus better we only become more and more impressed.
