Monkey Trap

I bet you’ve heard reference to a “monkey trap” before.  It’s a cage containing a piece of fruit with a hole large enough for a monkey’s hand to fit in, but not large enough for a monkey’s fist (holding the fruit) to come back out.  The monkey refuses to let go of the fruit and run away and is thus caught.

What do we refuse to let go of?
     Past hurts and perceived slights.
     Material things; money.
     “I’m right, and you’re wrong.”

Jesus understands that we too easily get caught in “monkey traps”.  He calls us on it:

“Simply put, if you’re not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it good-bye, you can’t be my disciple.”  Luke 14:33 The Msg

He knows that we can’t hold on to our “stuff” and truly follow him.  He knows it’s hard.  But if we are willing to let go, he’s got something way better for us.  Jesus is generous with his peace and if we only let go, we can be filled with his peace.

Heavenly Father, help us to let go and follow Jesus into life – full and real life.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9 or 10:30 as we gather to hear, see and feel the risen Lord among us.
