Mary or Martha Style ?

Dear Doers and Relaxers,

The story of Luke 10:38-42 tells the tale of two sisters Martha and Mary. Martha is a doer, she gets things done. Mary is relational and enjoys hanging out and learning about people. Which sister is doing the right thing?

Last week on the youth ministry trip to Milwaukee, we saw many vehicles that were vacation bound. We are deep in summertime, many people in our missional community are taking vacations. From what I’ve observed, there are “Mary Vacations” and there are “Martha Vacations.” Some people love to take a vacation in which they try to see six European countries in six days. Or they have only two weeks to engage in every single outdoor sport at least once during their vacation and they make the most of it. “Rest? I can rest at home when I get back from vacation,” they say.

Other people are of the “Mary Vacation “ type. They want to “get away from it all .” For them, a great vacation is lying upon the beach somewhere and doing absolutely nothing. They are into serenity, contemplation, and quiet relaxation. That’s their idea of a vacation.

One type of vacation is no better than the other. They are just different. One vacation puts a premium upon rest and rejuvenation; the other upon adventure and surprise. Either can be a great way to gain renewal.

Let us pray to be lead into the path that we have been created for as God's unique creations. May the rhythm of your renewal and service that makes you productive and gives you peace, be revealed unto you this day.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
