Love Like That

“And still, after all this time, the Sun has never said to the Earth,
"You owe me."
Look what happens with love like that.
It lights up the sky.”
― Rumi

I share with you today two of my all time favorite Rumi quotes. These quotes came to mind on Sunday, October 13th as Pastor Dave used the Genesis story of Joseph and his brothers to illustrate the power of relationship in forgiveness. I reflected on the grace and love it took to let go of the hurt and anger Joseph had over the way his brothers had treated him. I wonder if Joseph would have forgiven a stranger that had inflicted the same harm on him? Or was it the love that resulted from his familial relationship with his brothers that allowed him to choose forgiveness over bitterness? Perhaps this is why it is so important for each of to be in relationship with others, not just our own family, but our church family, our community family and our world family. Relationships foster love, love allows us to forgive and forgiveness is what the people of the world ultimately will need to practice if we are ever to achieve peace.

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing
and rightdoing there is a field.
I'll meet you there.

When the soul lies down in that grass
the world is too full to talk about.”
― Rumi
