Love in Action

Dear Lovers,

Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you should love one another.”( John 13:34)

Anyone who has sentimentalized this verse over the years has wrenched it out of its original context in the scriptures. Jesus is not just urging that the church be a friendly place with a great facility. Jesus had been warning the disciples to expect hostility and rejection from the world; hence his parting command that they love one another is a call for them to hang together, to present a united front against the world's hatred.

With the events in Boston in recent days,we are left with little doubt that the world still has more than its share of hatred. The power of Jesus' love (John 13; 31-35 ) which comes in forms such as radical forgiveness (Matthew 18:22) are the tools Christ offers us to lead others into the Kingdom of God.

The toolbox the world invites us to utilize includes revenge and retaliation. Jesus invites us to step out of the box, and walk behind him sharing the tool of love when others least expect it.

“I am drawn to the practices of the Christian church, I would maybe become a Christian if I only saw the teachings being put into practice.” Gandhi

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
