Look Up

1 John 4:20-21
Common English Bible (CEB)
If anyone says, I love God, and hates a brother or sister, he is a liar, because the person who doesn’t love a brother or sister who can be seen can’t love God, who can’t be seen. This commandment we have from him: Those who claim to love God ought to love their brother and sister also.

Loving others is not always the easiest thing to do…especially when your head hurts and you just want to go home.

Saturday we went to help out Randy’s mom with a few things around her place. We stayed and visited a bit and then headed out the door to get home for dinner. My migraine was picking up speed again and I really just wanted to get home.

That is when I saw her; a little old lady slowly getting in and out of her car. Yes in and out, as though she had forgotten why she was getting in the car to begin with. I grumbled inside because she was blocking my door and I had a feeling this would take some time. Then she looked up, and the grumble turned to a smile. Geese were flying overhead and I joined her in the moment.

“They are beautiful aren’t they?” I said.

“And they always follow their leader!” she replied. She also talked about how she always stopped to look at them whenever they flew overhead.

I got back in my car and realized we had just shared moment; we were children of God following their leader and taking a moment to love his creation.

Don’t miss a moment today by being in a hurry or angry with your neighbor…look up and follow your leader who tells us “All you need is to follow me and love. Your day will be perfect when you do as I command.”

Abba, thank-you for your teaching moments offered in unexpected places. I will look up today and follow you, should I forget, I trust you will offer me another teacher. Amen.
