Listening Comes First

“Listening comes first. In this life, you listen even before you are aware of it. From within the womb an unborn child is already listening to the voices of her parents. After her birth, she will spend the next months hearing the words they speak, whisper and sing to her, until one day she will start echoing those words, one imperfect syllable at a time.” Adam S. McHugh, in “The Listening Life”

Listening seems to be a lost art – there is a lot of noise and people yelling and trying to be heard. But who is listening?

There are many books available to help us grow the art of listening. But McHugh is right, we are born listening. We are created to listen. We must turn back to being our true selves.

This Lent, particularly at the Midweek Gatherings, listening will be our focus. I hope you will be able to join us Wednesday evenings in March and April 1st from 6:30 – 8:00 pm for supper and worship at Great Beginnings Café. We’ll have soup March 4, 18, & April 1 and pizza March 11 & 25.

“Listen to everything with your heart—Everything—and be still with it before acting on what you feel.” Mark Nepo

Tomorrow we gather at 10:00 to worship, praise and thank God and begin our focus on listening. It won’t be the same without you!

Grace be with you,
