Lights On

Have you heard the Maggie Rogers' song "Leave the Light On" ? I was listening to it recently when the old Motel 6 commercials came to mind, you know where Tom Bodett ends the piece with the reassurance that "we'll leave the light on for you?" Then my thoughts went to high school days when my mom would say goodbye as I headed out with friends into the midwestern evening saying "I'll leave the light on for you." (Full disclosure, I don't think she really said that, but she did always leave the light on!)

Think about all the references to light in the Bible. Here are a few examples:

  • Psalm 119:105.  Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
  • Matthew 4:16.  the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the …
  • Matthew 5:16. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your …
  • John 1:5. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
  • John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
  • Ephesians 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the LORD. Live as children of light

How do you feel knowing that the light is there for, reassured, loved? God is leaving the "light on" for us, we just need to step out of the darkness towards it.
