Let Go

Mark 7:1-23

Mark 7:8 “You have let go of the commands of GOD and are holding onto the traditions of men.”

Jesus says this after he is asked by the Pharisees why his disciples were eating food with unwashed hands.

“You have let go of the commands of GOD and are holding onto the traditions of men.”

Jesus then goes on to say to the Pharisees they have set aside the command to honor their father and mother, that is they (we) say their (our) efforts (money) to honor (help, love) their parents are dedicated to GOD.

It hit me this week while I was reading this passage that I’m glad Jesus “only” said this about the fifth commandment “Honor thy Father and Mother.”

It was hard for me growing up to reconcile this as I was beat by my mother. But as I have aged, and time separated me from the abuse, I was able to see that there were other things going on with my mom. We, you and I, do things that if we, you and I, had time and space to do things differently we would!

“You have let go of the commands of GOD and are holding onto the traditions of men.”

Jesus says commands, yes commands ! So, I read the 10 commandments again (Exodus 20, Deuteronomy 5) and there’s this 10th commandment “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house… wife, manservant, maidservant, ox, donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” We know who our neighbor is… right?

I had a thought this week as I was listening to the news… “We, you and I, have enough wealth to eliminate poverty but not greed.”

To covet means to desire something with evil motivation.

I have thought about what I desire… what do you desire?

I thought about what motivates me… what motivates you?

I am over half my life and what motivates me now is different than what motivated me when I was younger.

I pray for me, for you, for all of us… every child, woman, and man on this earth.. that we, you and I, come to know that everything we, you and I, have:

  • All my money? YES
  • all my material things? YES
  • all my wisdom and knowledge? YES
  • even my breath? YES
  • even the breath of my children? YES
  • all I have is a gift from GOD!

May we, you and I, this day let go of our traditions of man and hang onto the commands of GOD! AMEN!
