Knocked Down

"Try and fail, but don't fail to try." - Stephen Kaggwa.

"If you're not failing now and again it's a sign that you're not doing anything very innovative." - Woody Allen

"Failures are fingerposts on the road to achievement." C.S. Lewis

We try awfully hard to avoid failure. And we have good reason to. It's never a fun thing. Who wants to fail? Who wants to misstep? Or have to start over again? Or have to figure out what the new direction needs to be? Or have to worry about what will happen if we do fail? Or have to fight even harder to achieve what you are striving for? I think sometimes we fail because what we were aiming for wasn't the right thing to be aiming for. I think sometimes we fail because our egos need a reality check. I think sometimes we fail because we need to be forced to work harder for that something. What I know is that through failure God always teaches us invaluable lessons. These lessons are different for everyone, but more than once in your life you will fail, and you will grow from that failure. Someone recently told me that you learn a lot more from failure than you do from success. Isn't that the truth? When we get knocked down and we're trying to figure out how to get back up again, we're a lot more likely to turn to God than when everything in our life is looking rosy. Through failure God can make us stronger, God can get us to listen better to something we really need to hear, God can draw us nearer and show us the way.

One thing we can be absolutely certain of is that God is not only teaching us through our botched attempts, missteps, false starts and hard work, but He also never leaves our side.

"The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail." Isaiah 58:11. We will face failure, but God will never fail us.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for what you teach us through failure... for teaching us to go a different way, to work harder or to follow You more nearly or whatever the lesson may be. Please help us to try, no matter how afraid of failure we may be. Please help us to turn to You when we face failure, help us to look to You when we fall flat on our face. Above all, help us to glorify You through failure and success alike. Amen.

Grace & Peace,
Amanda Jensen
