Dear Political Followers of Jesus,

How are you going to vote? Are the political ads helpful? Are you tired of the politics and want to move on? Do you want to vote the way Jesus would vote? Jesus has strong political opinions.

“Give to the emperors what is the emperors , and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21)

The Emperor may not be persecuting the church in our part of the world, but the Emperor has many reasons for keeping the followers of Jesus in their place. Persecution is one way, trivialization of religion is another. In his much discussed book, “The Culture of Disbelief”, Yale University law professor Stephen L. Carter said: “In a sensible zeal to keep religion from dominating our politics, we have created a political and legal culture that presses the religiously faithful to be other than themselves, to act…as though their faith does not matter to them.” To treat “ Religious beliefs as arbitrary and unimportant.” To imply there is something wrong with religious devotion.” (Stephen L. Carter, The Culture of Disbelief, pages 3-6)

As followers of Jesus, let us pray for our political leaders, be they Republican, Democrat, or Independent. For those of us who will be voting soon, let us prayerfully consider our options for earthly leaders. May our ultimate faith rest in the fact that we are citizens of God's kingdom.

Still in one peace,
Pastor David J. Jensen
