Journaling Thanks

As Thanksgiving approaches I searched for Bible verses about giving thanks. Here are some that I found:

I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. Ephesians 1:16

[A]lways giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:20

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:15

[G]ive thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

I have recently begun keeping a gratitude journal—there really are so many things for which to be grateful. All the small things I take for granted such as a car that starts, shoes on my feet, fresh drinking water, a beautiful sunrise and list goes on and on. Sometimes it seems as though I reserve my thanks for the “big” things. But, as instructed in1 Thessalonians, we’re instructed to give “thanks in all circumstances.” Keeping the gratitude journal has been a good avenue for me to start a practice of giving thanks for all things and all circumstances. It has been an uplifting and peace filled practice.

Hopefully my thanks-giving practice will continue to include all days and all circumstances and not just be reserved for the “big things” or an official Thanksgiving day.

I found this Thanksgiving prayer which I think provides great perspective on all that I have to be thankful for:

O God when I have food, help me to remember the hungry.

When I have work, help me to remember the jobless.

When I have a home, help me to remember those who have no home at all.

When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer.

And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency.

Bestir my compassion, and be concerned enough to help.

By word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted.  Amen
