Jesus' Birthday Party

As we near the day to remember Jesus’ birth, I wanted to share with you a video I recently watched of pastor Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life. He spoke of a Christmas tradition his family has practiced for over fifty years, starting from when he was a young boy. He was inquiring of his mom about the story of Jesus and when his mom explained that Christmas was the celebration of Jesus’ birthday, he insisted their family must have a birthday party for Jesus, complete with angel food cake, which is of course how their family tradition was started. An essential part of their celebration is to have everyone share one thing they are thankful for during the year and one thing they plan on giving to Jesus during the upcoming year.

It is a great time to reflect that no matter how hard our year may have been, we still have received many blessings from God. Christmas is also a time to intentionally consider how we might share our blessings with others. It is a practice in which all ages can participate. It might even be fun to write down everyone’s answers and share them again in future years when children are older and lives have changed.

“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” Luke 2:10

Christmas is a time of traditions shared with family and friends. May each of you be blessed by the miracle of Jesus and may peace and comfort be given to all people on earth.

Happy Birthday Jesus!
