It's No Fairytale

Dear Grown Ups,

Theologian Paul Tillich lived the life of a typical late 19th century young German scholar. That all changed when he began his service as a chaplain in the Imperial German army during World War 1. One night after the battle of Champaign, while walking in the garish lights of the battle field, down the rows of the dead and the dying, Tillich recalled, ”There and then I became a tragic realist..”

I think we all know something of which Tillich is referring to. You have been there too. It is the great growing up that we all go through in life, when nursery tales fail us , and we enter the world of the tragic.

In it's fullness, Holy week holds a story for us to both wrestle with and embrace, that speaks to the tragedy faced by grownups of all ages. Judging from the very low attendance at Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services over the years, (compared to Easter) it seems the temptation is to skip the tragic and merely engage the victory. If the victory is viewed without the battle, Holy Week can appear to be a fairytale. The Passion Story is not a fairytale, it invites us to see a God who engages us now in the battles we fight, offering the promise of victory even in the midst of current suffering.

You are invited to :

Maundy Thursday observation at Great Beginnings Café. https://www.bing.com/search?q=great+beginnings+cafe&form=EDGHPC&qs=SC&cvid=619953687aff4a60a5ea8652a14bf165&pq=great+beggings+cae&cc=US&setlang=en-US 6-730pm.

Still in One Peace,
