It's In There

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

John 20:30, ”…these things are written so that you might come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah.”  In a nutshell, that is God's purpose behind giving us the gift of scripture.  The Bible introduces us to a host of humans God has used so that we might believe in the eternal story of Jesus.

One of the people that God has used in my life is Rich Mullins. I never met Rich personally, but his life and music has impacted my life. In regards to the sacred writings, Rich once said, “ The Bible is not a book for the faint of heart—it is a book full of greed and glory and violence and tenderness and sex and betrayal that benefits humankind. It is not the collection of pretty little anecdotes mouthed by pious little church mice—it does not so much nibble at our shoe leather as it cuts to the heart and splits the marrow from the bone. It does not give us answers fitted to our small minded questions, but truth that goes beyond what we even know to ask..”

On this Memorial Day weekend, we will give thanks for the saints who have gone before. Those like Rich Mullins who summons us to read the scriptures and be drawn in the harsh and compassionate reality of being a character in the sacred story. I highly recommend the book An Arrow Pointing To Heaven. (It is a devotional biography on the life of Rich Mullins by James Bryan Smith). More than any other book I recommend the scriptures and possibility that you will be drawn deeper into the truth that Jesus is the Messiah. Let us pause with regularity to meet the living Jesus in the scriptures.

May the Holy Spirit dwell with you in John 15:26-27 and John 16:4-15.

Pastor David J. Jensen
