It's How We Are Created

Yay! It’s a holiday three-day weekend. Finally, a chance to relax and get some down time. Right?

Does it seem like we wait for holidays, 3-day weekends, long-planned vacations or perhaps, getting sick, to find some down time? That’s not how we were created. We were created with the image – or impression of God upon us. (Genesis 1) That imprint of God on us leaves a space that can only be filled by God. And God can only fill that space when we spend some time abiding or resting in God. That’s not all God created us to do – we were created to be fruitful, to do meaningful work and have purpose. But we tend to get the resting and the working out of order.

We were created to work from rest, not to rest from work. Sure, it was on the 7th day of the creation story that God rested. But that 7th day was the beginning: God created humankind, gave work to do and then EVERYONE rested before getting to it.

What would it like look like if we worked from rest instead of working ourselves into stress-induced health issues? What would it look like if we worked from rest instead of working ourselves ‘til we can’t work anymore and can’t actually enjoy the rest? What would it look like if we rested and worked as God created us with a rhythm that allowed creativity and joy in both our rest and our work?

Why that might be heaven on earth.

Blessings for your time of rest this weekend. May you find some time for abiding (hanging out) with Jesus, with those you love and in God’s creation. We’ll be looking for you tomorrow as we gather for worship -- another thing we were created for: to be in community – at 9 or 10:30 tomorrow.

Grace and peace,
Vikki
