Is He Nearby, or Far Off?

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

What keeps you from feeling the “Peace (Love) of God which surpasses all human understanding?”(Ephesians 3:19)

Walter Brueggemann summarizes in “The Message of the Psalms,” “The main difficulties of Christian faith are ‘the problem of trusting a God who seems not available, and the problem of caring for a neighbor who is experienced as an enemy.”

Brueggemann’s words make me think. There are many times when God has felt available and close at hand. Most of the people I interact with are wonderful neighbors whom I enjoy very much. However, the times I feel the most consternation is when God feels far off, and there are people challenging me with their ways.

Perhaps for greater peace to enter the human heart we crave this Advent time. Come Lord Jesus with the truth of a God made flesh who dwells among us. Teach us all once more the value of loving the one most difficult to love.

For further reflection see Luke 1:26-55.

Prayers: For all of our mission partners that they might finish the year with strong financial resources. We especially pray for Rev Leon Kelly from Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, who will be with us in worship this week to offer a testimony of thanks during the offering.

Let us give thanks for the peace which comes to us in Advent

Still in One Peace,

Pastor David J. Jensen
