Including the Fall

As the days get shorter, the colors become more intense. And now I can see the mountain peaks from my office window are white. It’s beautiful.

I don’t like the shorter days. In our geographic area winter comes and is cold and dark and depressing. We try to light it up during the holidays or go south to places where we can forget about it. We want to skip the dark, cold season in this northern hemisphere.

And, in life.

We wish we could skip the cold, dark seasons of life. Dr. Brené Brown writes in Rising Strong: “The irony is that we attempt to disown our difficult stories to appear more whole or more acceptable, but our wholeness – even our wholeheartedness – actually depends on the integration of all of our experiences, including the falls.”

God created the seasons because we need it all. We want to skip the dark periods of life, the hard stuff, the struggles and the suffering. Of course we do. But when we lean in and own the journey and face it we might even find beauty in it.

“Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

That has been God’s promise from the days of old and continues through to this day and the next. May we own the dark, cold seasons of life that we might live whole in God’s presence and the courageous presence of one another.

We’ll be looking for you tomorrow at 9:00 or 10:30 that we might remind one another we can be strong because of Jesus’ mercy to change me, we and the world.

Grace and peace,
Vikki
