In the Quiet

Dear People of Ashes,

Today is Ash Wednesday, the day we embark into Lent. May this season of journeying to the cross renew our faith and strengthen us for service in God’s name.

We gather at Rock Canyon High School at 6:30pm for a worship service. The format is a more traditional service this year versus the come and go experience we have done in the past. We hope to see you all there to hear the word, share in Holy Communion, receive the ashes, and to hear the words of forgiveness.

My favorite Richard Foster prayer: “Prayer for Quiet..

                “I have, O Lord, a noisy heart. And entering toward silence doesn’t stop the inner clamor. In fact, it seems only to make it worse. When I am full of activity, the internal noise is only a distant rumble;

                 but when I get still, the rumble amplifies itself. And it is not like the majestic sound of a symphony

                 rising to a grand crescendo; rather, it is the deafening din of clashing pots and clinging pans.

                 What a racket! Worst of all, I feel helpless to hush the interior of pandemonium.

Dear Lord Jesus you once spoke peace to the wind and the waves. Speak Your shalom over my heart I wait silently…patiently.

I receive into the very core of my being Your living command, ‘Peace, be still.’ Amen”

   —Richard L. Foster “Prayers From the Heart (London : Hodder and Stoughton, 1996), 59.

Come let us gather this day in the quiet of Ash Wednesday.  Let us embrace this season of Lent. May it be a time that restores our soul and strengthens us for service in Jesus' name.

For further reflection read Psalm 51.

Prayers: That we might be faithful pilgrims, following Jesus to the cross this Lenten season.

We’ll be looking for you tonight at 6:30pm.

God's blessings,

Pastor David J. Jensen
