In a Different Light

Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:4

A friend gave me a magnet with this verse when I was dealing with infertility.  It was a comfort and a reminder to me that God wants to bless me.

At the time I thought that since a baby was the desire of my heart that surely God would answer my prayer with a "Yes!"  While that is exactly what happened, I've come to see this verse in a different light.

Instead of the emphasis on "desires of your heart" as in: a gift to me and my wants.  Now when I look at that verse I see a different emphasis.  "He will give you the desires of your heart." I believe this to mean that he will change my heart's desire to line up with his own.

I used to want every good earthly thing for my children and now I see that there is something much better. Setbacks and difficult times might be more beneficial for them at certain times in their lives.  Still, these are only of value if they/we let them be growing experiences.  I can't do it for them as much as I wish for it.

So my prayer is;
Lord, please help me to remember to delight in you and I ask that you would make the desires of my heart match your own.  Help me to trust you in ALL times and with all that you have given me, especially my children (who are                                                            really yours anyway).
