Imperfectly Perfect

We recently spent a couple of days on the beach near Myrtle Beach, SC. There's something to be said for all the things a beach has to offer...There's the constant waves rolling in and out with the ocean's current. Watching the dance of the little shore birds running back and forth as the water brings edible treats for them is mesmerizing. The sand squishing between your toes and looking at all of the various footprints left there is somehow satisfying. And then of course, there are the shells. I can never pass up an intriguing looking shell. As always, I gathered a couple of handfuls to bring home. Looking closely at them, I was struck with how different they all are...different textures, colors, some broken and chipped, some seemingly "perfect." This group of shells is kind of like us humans. Though we were all made in the image of God, life experiences and the mere fact of being human have caused us to have different textures, hardened or broken hearts, chips and dents. It's easy to look at your neighbor and see "perfection," but no doubt they too have their own brokenness. How reassuring to know that God loves us all despite all of our flaws.
