If Not Me or You … Then Who?

Happy New Year!!!! Wow!! Another year has come and gone. Did you make your “To Do List” for 2017? How is it going? We are into the 2nd week of the new year ~ are you still “thinking” about your New Year’s Resolutions or “wishing” you’d done more in 2016? Or are you actually doing something to accomplish these goals by year end? Perhaps a little of both?

Last year at this time I reflected on “If Not Now … When??” I reflected on how God takes us as His own ... just as we are ... RIGHT NOW!! Not “later” … Not after we “do this” or “do that”. God loves us unconditionally RIGHT NOW!! I am thankful that God loves us in the here and now every day, every step of the way.

So, if God is right here, right now, why all the turmoil in the world? Why is it so hard for people to embrace differences and be kind to one another?

As God often does, He magically appears and a song or lyric(s) gets stuck in my head. A week or so ago, I heard the song “Do Something” by Matthew West. The words of the chorus spoke to me:

If not us, then who
If not me and you
Right now, it’s time for us to do something
If not now, then when
Will we see an end
To all this pain
It’s not enough to do nothing
It’s time for us to do something

Two things from the chorus definitely stuck out to me …

First, the words “If not now, then when”. Wow!! What a reminder of the reflection I had a year ago at this time. A beautiful reminder that we are God’s no matter what. We are all children of God and we are loved unconditionally regardless of the things we accomplished on our “2016 To Do List”.

Second, the words “If not us, then who … If not me and you”. Think about that for a second. God is with us every step of our journey … but it is me … it is you … it is us who must walk together in relationship with God to make a change in this world.

Change … while it can be a good thing, it doesn’t always mean it is easy. Stepping outside of our comfort zones and doing new things can be scary. It can also be exciting.

As I think about the New Year and all I hope 2017 will be, I am reminded that I too have to do my part. Just because I’ve “made a list” doesn’t mean it will happen. I must be a part of the solution if you will. I must make a change or two and be willing to do things that may not always be comfortable. What is of comfort though, is that I will walk a journey with my family and friends and even complete strangers all because God created me to make a change. That it all starts with us – me and you. How will you walk thru your new year?

Dear God, Thank you for loving us no matter where we are in any given moment on any given day. Please help us to remember that we are not alone, that we have ourselves, each other and above all else we have you. Please walk with us as we make choices and changes in the New Year that may be a little uncomfortable or scary. May we be reminded that it all starts thru you because we were created to make a difference. May you wrap your arms around us so that we may feel your loving embrace today and always. In your name we pray. Amen.
