How Long ?

“How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 82

“How long” is a loaded question. I used to use it a lot, but I don’t think it is what I should be asking.

How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? The psalmist is calling me to evaluate my actions, my intentions. “How long” will I say the right thing, but not follow through with my actions.

This is a dilemma we all face, it is something I struggle with everyday. I want to “defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” But I’m tired, what about me time, what about me?

There is nothing bad or wrong with taking time for yourself, but if taking time for yourself stops you from defending the weak or maintaining the rights of the poor then maybe we need to do as the psalmist asks and evaluate our actions, our intentions.

Don’t be afraid to love when you’re tired or alone. Don’t be afraid to love when you’re hurt or to love when you’re in pain. Jesus didn’t “tell” us to love as a duty. Jesus wants us to love because love heals us. Love isn’t the method, love is the answer.

We need and can come to the same paradox Mother Teresa came to when she said, “I have found the paradox, if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, only more love.”

The question I need to ask myself isn’t “how long” can I love, the question is what is preventing me from love? GOD is way ahead of us, GOD is way behind us, GOD is way all over us in this.

GOD doesn’t love us if we change, GOD loves us so we can change! AMEN.

Precious Father, Loving God, Holy Spirit, help us to see your presence in everything we do, everything we say, everything we think. Help us to love! AMEN!
