His Smile

Hebrews 13:16  And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Have you ever heard something "new" in a song that you've heard at least a thousand times before?  That's what happened to me at the Christmas eve service this year.

I've never really enjoyed the song The Little Drummer Boy; it's too repetitive for my taste- anyway I was singing along when all of a sudden I heard the part "then he smiled at me" in a new way.  I was so struck by the idea of doing something that would make Jesus smile. Of pleasing him for no other reason than to express my gratitude.  It seemed an idea so small and so huge at the same time.  Since then I've been trying to consciously weigh my actions against that very idea and asking myself "would this make Jesus smile"?  It reminds me of the popular book and slogan that was out a few years ago... What would Jesus do?

I'm praying that as this year unfolds there will be a shift in the way I see others.  It could be a small gift of thanks to the one who gave everything.
