Hidden Treasures

What is a treasure? Is it something you already have and hold a special attachment to? Or is it something unseen like a “buried” treasure? Looking for treasure can be challenging or perhaps maybe a bit scary or uncertain as you encounter obstacles along the way. Yet, there is also something exciting about the journey and then of course, the sense of accomplishment and enjoyment once the treasure has been found. The dictionary defines “Treasure” as having wealth or something of great worth or value.

Does wealth have to be something physical or things that are tangible? What if we have wealth but can’t always see it? I was driving to work this week thinking “Sometimes I wish I had as much confidence in myself as those people in my life who can see it in me”. I’m human and sometimes, emotions and things get the best of me. And then I realized. I, am a hidden treasure and there are treasures hidden inside myself that I myself may not yet see, but someone else already does.

God wastes nothing and sends people into our lives, our angels if you will, to make sure that we are watched over and taken care of. These treasures may be our family, our friends, or complete strangers just crossing our path in the moment. How wonderful is it that we have God and his army making sure that we know our worth and our value!

We, along with all of our hidden treasures (whatever they may be) are beautiful miracles just like the miracle birth of the baby Jesus. Luke 2 tells of a story from long ago about a tiny treasure, named Jesus. In some respects, Jesus was hidden away in a stable, tucked into a manger. However, the treasure did not stay hidden for long. God made sure that the Angels, the Shepherds and the Wisemen all came to see the baby Jesus and go on to tell of his wonderful birth and proclaim the Good News. That tiny baby went on to do great things. As I reread the story, I was also reminded of how Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart (Luke 2:19 NIV). Treasures of the heart are something special.

Treasures. What wonderful and awesome things! May we all be reminded this season that we are all beautiful children of God and that God is not going to let us hide away by ourselves. God sent his Son to lead the way for us. God sends us beautiful treasures to remind us that we too are HIS treasures.

Dear God, Thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus. As we continue to anticipate the arrival of Jesus this season, may we be reminded that we are truly a treasure. May we also find the treasures and beauty in others in a world that could use more love; both for ourselves and others. In your name we pray. Amen.
